Fast-forward 20 years, and many maritime industry leaders will tell you they expect to see fully autonomous ships that produce zero greenhouse emissions across all shipping verticals. Well, the visionary team at Unleash Future Boats, a German deep-tech start-up, asked themselves why wait 20 years when this can happen today? Thanks to their innovations, we may see zero emission and autonomous water taxis as soon as our next trip to Germany.
The two driving forces behind Unleash Future Boats, Diana and Stefanie Engelhard, have created environmentally friendly and autonomous vessels that use green hydrogen with fuel cells for electric propulsion aiming to have zero emissions in terms of noise pollution, air pollution, and water pollution. Diana Engelhard serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), while Stefanie Engelhard holds the position of Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Both founders have extensive backgrounds in autonomous systems and sustainable technologies and have envisioned these vessels to have the following features:
- Carbon-Free Operation: Hydrogen fuel cells produce only water as a byproduct, eliminating CO₂ emissions.
- Higher Energy Efficiency: Compared to internal combustion engines, fuel cells convert energy more efficiently, reducing overall energy consumption.
- Lower Noise Pollution: Electric and hydrogen-powered vessels operate more quietly, minimizing disruptions to marine ecosystems and improving onboard comfort.
- AI-Driven Navigation: Equipped with sensors and artificial intelligence, these vessels can detect obstacles, optimize routes, and adjust to real-time conditions.
- Remote Monitoring and Control: Cloud-based connectivity enables ship operators to track vessel performance, ensuring safety and efficiency.
- 5G and IoT Integration: Real-time data exchange between vessels, control centers, and ports enhances operational coordination and security.

Unleash Future Boats GmbH has developed FUTURE ONE, an innovative, fully electric, and autonomous catamaran powered by green hydrogen.

Designed for both passenger and goods transport, FUTURE ONE offers a silent and efficient travel experience, with the capability to recharge eBikes on board. Its multi-hull design ensures safety and suitability for shallow waters, featuring independent drive trains in each hull for redundancy and reliability. The vessel is barrier-free, accommodating bicycles, strollers, and wheelchairs, and utilizes a modular development approach akin to the automotive industry. This modularity, combined with complete digital integration, allows for continuous system enhancements, ensuring a convenient and enjoyable journey for all users.
Product : CargoOne
Unleash Future Boats GmbH is developing CargoOne, an autonomous, emission-free catamaran designed to address logistical challenges and low water levels in inland waterways.

Measuring approximately 17 meters (55 feet), CargoOne can transport a 40-foot container, making it ideal for in-port logistics and reliable connections between terminals and ports. Its modular design, inspired by the automotive industry, features independent drive trains in each hull, ensuring redundancy and fail-safe operations. CargoOne utilizes the Digital Port Protocol (DPP) to enable secure communication between vessels and infrastructure, facilitating coordinated fleet operations that mimic train-like formations on waterways. Constructed from aluminum using advanced robotic welding techniques, CargoOne offers a scalable and sustainable solution for modern maritime logistics.
Building a Green Maritime Infrastructure
For sustainable water transport to be truly effective, the supporting infrastructure must also evolve. Unleash Future Boats is working on developing a hydrogen-based energy ecosystem to support the transition to clean maritime fuel. Their initiatives include:
- Hydrogen Refueling Stations: Establishing fueling points at strategic locations to support hydrogen-powered vessels.
- Integration with Renewable Energy Sources: Using solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen, ensuring an environmentally friendly fuel supply.
- Scalable and Modular Design: Their vessels are designed to integrate new energy solutions without requiring major structural changes.
Regulatory Compliance and Safety Measures
As new technologies emerge, regulatory frameworks must also adapt to ensure safety and compliance. Unleash Future Boats aligns its innovations with international maritime regulations, particularly those established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Key safety measures include:
- Redundant Safety Systems: Autonomous vessels are equipped with fail-safe mechanisms to handle emergencies.
- Data Security: Encrypted communications protect navigation systems from cybersecurity threats.
- Collision Prevention: AI-driven hazard detection systems enhance safety by minimizing the risk of accidents.
Investment and Partnerships
While Unleash Future Boats has not disclosed the total funding it has received, according to data from Dealroom.com, the company is backed by several investors, including the European Space Agency (ESA),BIC Baden-Württemberg, Startport, GATEWAY49 Accelerator, and Ocean Impact Organisation. In June 2022, AMPD Technologies (Canada) Inc., a subsidiary of AMPD Ventures Inc., entered into a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Unleash Future Boats GmbH (UFB) for CAD $1.8 million to be used for developing and manufacturing four Computing Containers to support autonomous, zero-emission maritime vessels.
