The maritime industry has long faced challenges related to navigational safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability. Traditional navigation systems often rely on outdated data, leading to inefficiencies and increased risks. With over half a million vessels operating globally, the need for real-time data integration is paramount to enhance safety and optimize routes. Furthermore, the push towards sustainable shipping practices necessitates solutions that can reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
To address these challenges, CEO Jisoo Kim and Captain Hongrai Cho came together in 2020 to found Mapsea which provides an all-in-one real-time maritime big data solution. Under the duo’s leadership, the company has developed innovative marine technology solutions, including nautical augmented reality systems and marine drones, aiming to connect people and the sea sustainably. In July 2024, Mapsea secured an undisclosed amount in Series A funding from BNK Venture Capital and the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) to support their expansion.
Mapsea’s technology integrates artificial intelligence (AI) and multi-sensor data to provide real-time maritime navigation solutions with zero delay, according to the company. By monitoring over 700,000 vessels in real time, the system offers comprehensive situational awareness to both mariners and onshore management teams. The platform’s ability to calculate a ship’s position on a nautical chart using AI and sensor data ensures accurate navigation, reducing the risk of collisions and grounding. Other features such as navigating and docking modes for offshore operations, route deviation alerts, and Just in Time Arrival optimization assist onshore management, thereby improving operational efficiency and reducing fuel consumption. Additionally, the integration of ocean data allows for the mapping of sea conditions, aiding in voyage optimization and environmental monitoring.
While the technology may raise concerns of over-reliance on technology that may reduce traditional navigation skills among mariners, the benefits of enhanced safety, efficiency and sustainability are attracting attention from the industry. In April 2024, Mapsea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korea Shipmasters Forum (KSMA) to collaborate on the development of its systems. This partnership aims to integrate practical insights from experienced shipmasters into Mapsea’s technological advancements, ensuring the solutions meet the real-world needs of maritime professionals.
The Bigger Picture: Navigation Technology in Shipping
The maritime industry is increasingly recognizing the value of AI and advanced technologies in navigation and operations. Companies like Mapsea are at the forefront of this transformation, offering solutions that optimize routes, predict maintenance needs, and improve overall operational efficiency. The adoption of such technologies is likely to be met with enthusiasm, given their potential to reduce human error, lower operational costs, and enhance safety. However, challenges such as regulatory compliance, cybersecurity concerns, and the need for industry-wide standards may influence the pace of adoption. Regardless, expect to see ship owners and operators trialling these technologies at a faster pace in an effort to stay competitive in this ever evolving industry.
