OpenTug is a Seattle-based maritime logistics technology company that is modernizing the inland and coastal barge freight industry through smart, integrated digital solutions. Founded in 2019, OpenTug addresses the long-standing inefficiencies of barge transportation; an industry traditionally burdened by manual coordination, paper documentation, and underutilized vessel capacity. By providing tools for quoting, booking, scheduling, tracking, and analytics within a single platform, OpenTug enables seamless collaboration between barge operators, shippers, terminals, and ports.
The company was born from the founders’ firsthand experiences with the fragmented state of maritime logistics. Jason Aristides, OpenTug’s co-founder and CEO, previously worked in maritime operations at Curtin Maritime Corp, where he observed how outdated systems created costly inefficiencies. He partnered with Luciano de la Iglesia, now CTO, who brought a deep background in data science from Microsoft, and Mike Baldwin, a former AWS logistics expert who now serves as COO. Together, they combined domain expertise in shipping and software to build a scalable platform aimed at revitalizing America’s underused “blue highways” it’s inland and coastal waterways.

OpenTug’s flagship product, BargeOS, empowers operators to manage cargo, capacity, quotes, positions, and voyages through a single digital dashboard. The system uses AI to optimize asset utilization and generate insights, while also enabling real-time tracking and alerts. A second product, LinerOS, is designed for coastal shipping networks and integrates with port and terminal systems to digitize routine workflows. By replacing spreadsheets, emails, and manual coordination with intelligent automation, OpenTug delivers dramatic improvements in visibility, efficiency, and customer service.
In March 2025, OpenTug announced it had secured a $2.2 million strategic investment led by TMV (Trail Mix Ventures), a venture capital firm based in New York that focuses on logistics and maritime innovation. This investment brings OpenTug’s total funding to $5.3 million, including a prior $3.1 million round. TMV’s involvement signals strong confidence in OpenTug’s long-term potential to modernize and digitize the U.S. barge industry a segment that has historically lagged behind in adopting digital infrastructure.
Though specific customer names have not been disclosed publicly, OpenTug has reported measurable outcomes across several regions, including increased fleet utilization, reduced idle time, and better coordination across stakeholders in the supply chain. Terminals and operators have been able to automate routine scheduling, reduce manual errors, and improve their capacity planning thanks to OpenTug’s data-driven features. Many users refer to the system as a “single pane of glass” for managing marine freight providing unified insight and actionability from quote to delivery.
In conclusion, OpenTug is not only digitizing a long-neglected segment of the shipping industry, it is also reimagining how barge logistics can become a scalable, efficient, and environmentally responsible mode of transportation. With its strong founding team, growing network of partners, and support from top-tier maritime investors like TMV, OpenTug is poised to become the digital backbone of inland and coastal marine freight. As demand for sustainable logistics grows and supply chains seek more resilient options, OpenTug stands out as a practical, data-driven solution for the future of maritime freight.
