The burgeoning offshore wind industry, a critical pillar in the global transition to clean energy, faces a significant and costly vulnerability: the failure of subsea power cables. These vital arteries, responsible for transmitting massive amounts of electricity to shore, are susceptible to a range of hidden threats, from abrasion and fatigue to exposure and torsion. A single cable failure can result in millions of dollars in repair costs and lost revenue, creating a massive pain point for an industry striving for reliability and cost-effectiveness. This is where Indeximate steps in, bridging the gap between uncertainty and insight with a groundbreaking risk intelligence solution that is poised to transform the maintenance and management of these critical subsea assets.
Indeximate is a UK-based climate tech startup focused on preventing failure in subsea power cables by turning fibre optic sensing data into actionable health intelligence. Its mission is to shift submarine cable maintenance from reactive interventions to predictive, preventative management, thereby reducing downtime, repair costs, and climate risks associated with cable failures. Indeximate Ltd was founded in the UK in 2022 by three fibre-sensing experts: Dr Christopher “Chris” Minto, Dr Alastair Bryan Godfrey, and Paul Clarkson. Chris Minto brings decades of experience in commercialising acoustic and fibre-optic sensing technologies, having co-founded prior sensing companies and driving product development in challenging industrial settings. Alastair Godfrey holds a PhD in physics and is a prolific inventor, with a strong track record in early-stage tech and intellectual property in sensing technologies. Paul Clarkson contributes expertise in algorithm design, machine learning, precision measurement and transforming research into operational sensing products with the mission of tackling one of the biggest challenges in renewable offshore energy: the frequent and costly failures of subsea power cables. As these cables are the lifelines of offshore wind farms, interconnectors, and tidal energy projects, protecting them from degradation is a critical priority for these industries.
Indeximate’s core service revolves around “Scattersphere®”, which essentially listens to what subsea cables are “saying”. It is an advanced Cable Risk Intelligence solution designed to transform subsea asset monitoring. Using proprietary Indeximate® technology, the platform efficiently captures and compresses Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data, which powers real-time analytics and predictive insights. The platform can store and analyze a full year of vibrational data while maintaining instant access. This efficient data capture and storage architecture creates the perfect foundation for advancing machine learning capabilities and predictive modeling.
Year-long Risk Profiles generated from Scattersphere include:
- Continuous risk assessment and early warning detection.
- Interactive visualizations and customizable dashboards.
- Deep historical pattern analysis and trending.
- High-fidelity tagged data capture optimized for AI/ML applications.
- Forensic investigation capabilities.
By leveraging the fibre optic cores already present in many subsea cables, Indeximate can monitor for a wide range of degradation mechanisms, including:
- Abrasion: Measuring the wear rate of a cable dragging across rocks to predict its remaining lifespan.
- Vibration and Fatigue: Detecting vibrations that can lead to fatigue and accelerated degradation.
- Exposure: Identifying sections of the cable that are exposed and at higher risk of damage from anchors or fishing.
- Integrity: Using a patented approach to monitor the cable’s structural integrity by analyzing its vibration response to the power flowing through it.
- Skipping and Torsion: Detecting damaging events like the cable skipping over rocks or twisting.
In addition to its continuous monitoring service, Indeximate also offers targeted campaigns, such as failure pinpointing, turnkey diagnostic health assessments, and “palliative care” to extend the life of failing cables. By being hardware-agnostic, Indeximate’s solution works with major DAS suppliers, eliminating the need for specialized sensor installation and making adoption easier for offshore operators. Delivered as a “sensing-as-a-service” subscription model, the platform provides real-time condition monitoring, anomaly pinpointing, and life-cycle analysis, enabling offshore wind farms, interconnectors, and tidal energy projects to reduce unplanned outages, cut repair costs, and extend cable lifetimes.

Indeximate secured its first round of funding in a Seed investment led by Propeller Ventures, a Boston-based climate-tech fund focused on ocean-climate startups. The seed investment will support key hires, drive technology verification, and accelerate the company’s move toward offering “Sensing as a Service.” In addition to financial backing, Indeximate has benefited from support via accelerators and grants, including UK-based programs (such as Innovate UK Business Connect) and technology incubators / hubs with interest in offshore wind and marine technologies
Final Thoughts
Indeximate is an emerging player in the marine / renewable infrastructure sector. With its foundation in fibre optic sensing, data analytics, and a service-based model, it addresses a critical vulnerability in subsea power systems cable failure which is proving critical to the industry. Its early traction (e.g. MeyGen) and seed funding from Propeller Ventures indicate both market interest and viability.
