In today’s maritime industry, vessel operators face a common pain point: a massive amount of onboard data from sensors and control systems that remains fragmented, inconsistent, and underutilized. This lack of integration prevents companies from gaining real-time insights, predicting failures, and optimizing performance, ultimately leading to inefficiencies, higher fuel costs, and unplanned downtime. To solve this, Nortech AI delivers an end-to-end Industrial IoT (IIoT) platform designed specifically for the maritime sector with the aim of connecting onboard systems, standardizing data, and transforming raw signals into actionable intelligence for smarter, more sustainable operations.
Nortech AI is a Norwegian Portuguese technology company that offers an end to end Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solution for the maritime industry. Its platform enables vessels to extract, store, analyse, and utilize data from onboard equipment and sensors, providing real time insights, predictive capabilities, and operational optimization.
In the maritime sector, ships are outfitted with a multitude of sensors and control systems. However, much of that data remains siloed or underutilized. Nortech AI was founded to bridge this gap: to connect disparate onboard systems, standardize signal capture, and make ship level data actionable. By offering a “plug and play” approach to digitalization, Nortech seeks to reduce the complexity and friction often involved in retrofitting legacy systems, enabling shipping companies and ship operators to adopt data driven decision making more readily.
Nortech further positions itself not just as a maritime solution, but as a platform that could scale to other “asset heavy” industries that require equipment level connectivity, analytics, and optimization. Nortech AI delivers a full stack solution spanning data extraction, data storage, and data utilization.
Here is a breakdown of the major components and features:
- Data Extraction
- Interface with onboard control systems or passively “listen” to existing signals.
- Discover and map signals, standardize naming, and translate protocols so that heterogeneous equipment can be integrated.
- Data Storage
- A cloud (or hybrid) storage layer with “hot” (fast access) and “cold” (archival) capabilities.
- Historical data APIs to allow integration of analytics and retrospective analysis.
- Data Utilization / Analytics / Dashboarding
- Customizable dashboards and KPI visualizations to monitor key performance metrics (fuel, emissions, engine behavior, etc.).
- Virtual sensors: compute derived metrics (e.g. fuel consumption) by combining multiple signals, potentially even without dedicated hardware sensors.
- Predictive modeling and anomaly detection (e.g. failure prediction) via machine learning, potentially using partner technologies (e.g. Jungle AI).
- Edge dashboards and fleet wide views to monitor multiple vessels in a unified interface.
Nortech AI offers several tiered packages designed to match different operational needs, from basic data capture to full-featured analytics and compliance. The entry-level “Your Cloud” package includes essentials like unlimited cold storage, signal discovery, protocol mapping, data standardization, edge dashboards, and historical API access. Stepping up, the “Nortech Cloud Basic” package adds capabilities such as virtual sensors, analytics tools, a customer portal, cloud dashboards, and live API. The most advanced tier, “Nortech Cloud Advanced,” provides digital twin models, predictive analytics, regulatory compliance modules, performance analytics, asset management, and broad integrations with ERP, third-party solutions, and IT/operational systems. Each package builds upon the previous one, allowing companies to scale up functionalities as their data maturity and business needs grow.
Nortech AI has successfully raised a €2.5 million seed round led by Indico Capital Partners and Earlybird-X, marking a significant milestone in its mission to drive data-driven transformation within the maritime industry. Stephan Morais, Managing General Partner at Indico Capital Partners, stated:
“The maritime industry is ripe for the implementation of software that helps it become more sustainable. Nortech’s software integrates quickly with existing onboard systems, allowing ship operations to become more sustainable immediately. We are proud to support this global maritime industry transition with our Blue Fund.”
Michael Schmitt, Partner at Earlybird-X, added:
“Industrial IoT is a critical conduit for streamlined, intelligent, and sustainable operations. Nortech AI simplifies the digitalization journey, empowering industries to become more data-driven without hassle.”
Partnership
Nortech AI has established several strategic partnerships to strengthen its capabilities and expand its reach. One of its key collaborations is with Telenor Maritime, where Nortech combines its expertise in data and AI with Telenor’s connectivity infrastructure to drive maritime digitalization improving operational efficiency, decision-making, and sustainability. (nortech.ai) Another important partnership is with Jungle AI, aimed at enhancing predictive maintenance capabilities, enabling vessel operators to detect and address potential equipment issues before they escalate through proactive data-driven insights. (nortech.ai) In addition, Nortech AI collaborates with Arkitech to optimize energy consumption in onboard HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. This partnership integrates Arkitech’s AI-based software platform with Nortech’s data collection capabilities, reducing HVAC energy usage while maintaining comfort and performance onboard.
Case Study
Nortech AI’s real-world impact is best illustrated through several case studies across diverse maritime applications. One example is UPTIME International, a leading gangway system provider that initially lacked digital infrastructure for data collection, visualization, or integration. Nortech built a tailored digital ecosystem, embedding its IIoT platform into UPTIME’s control systems to enable data-driven operations. By collecting real-time sensor data such as pressures, movements, and positions and developing predictive models to monitor bumper wear, Nortech helped UPTIME shorten testing cycles, improve gangway safety, and even create new data-driven service offerings for clients.
Another success story comes from Frydenbø Industri, which needed a solution to store and analyze data from its “Dyno engine brake” and “Engine Performance” systems. Before Nortech’s involvement, data was only displayed locally, making it difficult to assess long-term performance trends. Nortech implemented a cloud-based solution and intuitive dashboards to visualize key metrics like RPM, pressure, and running hours. With automated alerts and historical data access via Frydenbø’s “Forward Digital Hub,” engineers can now identify engine issues early, optimize performance, and enhance reliability providing added value to both internal teams and customers.
Finally, Coral Expeditions, a luxury expedition cruise operator, turned to Nortech AI to improve operational transparency and ensure accurate, real-time vessel data. Nortech integrated its platform across two vessels, streaming live data to the cloud and building customized dashboards that display performance KPIs. During deployment, the company detected and resolved data inconsistencies in coordination with the control system manufacturer, improving data accuracy and reliability. Today, Coral Expeditions enjoys greater confidence in its operational data, enabling proactive decision-making and reduced operational risks, with plans underway for deeper API integrations and virtual sensors tailored to its fleet.
Final Thoughts
Nortech AI is emerging as a compelling player at the intersection of maritime engineering and industrial digitalization. By offering an end to end IIoT stack tailored for ships and vessels, the startup helps maritime operators overcome one of their biggest challenges unlocking value from data already generated onboard. Its plug and play, modular approach reduces complexity and time to value, enabling operators to adopt analytics, predictive models, and dashboards without major system overhauls. In summary, Nortech AI is navigating a promising course: bringing industrial IoT and AI into maritime operations in a practical, scalable way. If it succeeds in its expansion and execution, it could be a foundational infrastructure player in the digital transformation of the shipping industry.
