Ports, once filled with the rumble of diesel engines and haze of exhaust, are entering a cleaner era. As maritime regulations tighten and sustainability ambitions rise, ship operators and port authorities are racing to cut emissions not just at sea, but also while vessels sit idle at the quay. Enter shore power, a concept quietly reshaping the maritime energy landscape by enabling ships to plug into land-based electricity instead of burning fuel. At the center of this transformation stands Zinus AS, a Norwegian innovator determined to electrify the global maritime sector with solutions that are as reliable as they are environmentally conscious.

Zinus AS is a Norwegian company specialising in innovative shore power and charging solutions for the maritime sector. With a focus on sustainable and zero-emission infrastructure, Zinus develops, manufactures and deploys systems that enable vessels to connect to shore electricity rather than burning fossil-fuelled generators while docked. This innovation helps ports and ships drastically reduce emissions, noise, and fuel consumption. Founded in 2018 and led by CEO Endre Eidsvik, Zinus AS is headquartered in Bømlo/Rubbestadneset, Norway, and serves both domestic and international markets.

Among its key products are the Zinus Shore Power Compact, Telescopic, and Cruiser series, which deliver high voltage electrical power safely and efficiently to vessels of various sizes. These systems are built to withstand harsh marine environments, tidal variations, and vessel movements, ensuring reliable performance under demanding conditions.

Another flagship line is the Charging Telescopic and Charging Telescopic Autonomous systems,   automated charging towers that can connect to vessels within seconds without manual handling, offering a seamless and safe power connection for hybrid and fully electric ferries. Zinus also provides cable management systems that organize and deploy high voltage cables efficiently, ensuring easy operation and minimal space usage on quays. A defining feature of Zinus’s design approach is the focus on aesthetics and functionality, making the equipment both visually appealing and environmentally resilient. All Zinus products are engineered with user  friendliness, energy efficiency, and sustainability as core priorities, aligning with global maritime decarbonization goals and new emission regulations for ports worldwide.

Since early 2023, Zinus AS has been on a dynamic global expansion spree, bringing its shore-power and marine charging systems to ports and ferry routes from the Baltic to New Zealand. In December 2023, the company supplied its autonomous charging solution for the world’s first zero-emissions Ro-Pax ferry, delivering next-level battery connect-tech. In June 2024, Zinus clinched a landmark contract with ABB Marine & Ports, delivering a port electrification system for cruise-ship shore power at Portsmouth.  On top of that, the company announced in June 2025 the establishment of a new office in Seattle, underlining its ambition to support the North-American market’s switchover to electrified maritime operations. Together, these moves paint a picture of Zinus stepping firmly into the role of global enabler for vessel-and-port electrification, an energised partner for operators and the clean-shipping future alike.

The company is set to accelerate its global ambitions following a NOK 50 million (About USD 4.9 Mio) investment from Nysnø Climate Investments and Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping Ventures (EPS Ventures) in 2024. The strengthened capital foundation marks a pivotal leap in driving sustainable maritime technologies, as both investors bring valuable expertise and a strong commitment to maritime decarbonization. CEO Endre Eidsvik emphasized that the addition of Nysnø and EPS Ventures as shareholders and Board representatives will sharpen Zinus’s strategic direction and fuel international growth. Meanwhile, existing shareholders, including LOS Gruppen, Eviny Ventures, and DSD, maintain their support and confidence in Zinus’s long-term vision to advance cleaner port operations worldwide..

Final Thoughts

As ports evolve from fossil-fueled giants into clean-energy gateways, companies like Zinus are proving that the transition can be both practical and profound. The quiet hum of shore power replacing the growl of diesel generators represents more than a technological shift. It is a promise that global trade and ocean stewardship can coexist. With every autonomous connector and every newly electrified quay, Zinus charts a course toward a maritime future where sustainability isn’t an aspiration at the horizon, but the very current moving the industry forward.
