DRIFT Energy is a British deep-tech renewable energy startup developing a revolutionary class of mobile, ocean-based power plants: high-performance sailing vessels that harvest deep ocean wind and produce clean, green hydrogen. By using advanced AI routing and renewable energy generation systems, DRIFT’s technology aims to make gigawatt-scale renewable energy at sea and deliver it globally to ports, heavy industries, island nations, and shipping operators.
Founded in 2021 and headquartered in the United Kingdom, DRIFT Energy is tackling one of the biggest challenges of the global energy transition: accessing abundant, dependable, and truly clean energy. Traditional renewable infrastructure like wind turbines and solar farms face geographic and grid constraints while vast wind resources over the oceans remain underutilized. DRIFT’s solution is to convert that untapped resource into green hydrogen using self-propelling sailing vessels that generate more energy than they consume, creating what the company calls “net-positive shipping.”
The company’s mission supports climate goals by enabling a distributed, scalable renewable energy network that can operate independently of existing terrestrial infrastructure and help decarbonize heavy industries, transportation, and island economies.
DRIFT Energy was founded by Ben Medland, who serves as the company’s CEO. Medland is a systems engineer and multi-award-winning entrepreneur with extensive experience in energy, digital transformation, and sustainability. His leadership and vision have been pivotal in shaping DRIFT’s mission and technological direction. Other early team members include naval architect Mike Mackay and marine engineer Neal Pawson, both deeply involved in vessel design and execution.
DRIFT Energy’s core product is a new class of mobile, renewable energy vessels, high-performance sailing ships that harness deep ocean wind to generate green hydrogen at sea. These self-contained floating power plants use advanced hydrogeneration turbines and megawatt-class electrolysers to convert the kinetic energy of wind and water into clean electricity and then split seawater into green hydrogen, storing it onboard until delivery. A proprietary AI-enabled routing algorithm keeps the fleet in optimal wind and weather conditions to maximize energy production and efficiency. Unlike traditional fixed renewable infrastructure, DRIFT’s energy yachts are able to roam where the wind is best, producing more power more of the time and delivering renewable hydrogen directly to ports and customers around the world, helping decarbonize hard-to-abate industries and transport sectors
DRIFT Energy has raised significant early-stage financing to support its development of ocean-based renewable energy technology. In August 2024 the company closed a £4.65 million seed funding round led by Octopus Ventures, a major UK and European venture capital firm known for investing in deep tech and climate-focused startups, with additional support from Blue Action Accelerator, an international climate tech investment platform powered by Founders Factory. The funding also includes backing from Innovate UK, the UK government’s innovation agency, which awarded DRIFT grant funding to accelerate research and development. These investors are primarily based in the United Kingdom and Europe, with accelerator partners connected to global maritime and energy networks, enabling DRIFT to scale its vessel design programme, expand its team, and move toward first production milestones.
Final Thought
DRIFT Energy is innovating at the intersection of renewable energy, maritime engineering, and AI. By transforming the oceans into a vast, mobile power grid, the company is pioneering a new class of net-positive energy ships that could reshape how the world produces and distributes clean power especially in sectors and regions underserved by traditional grids. With strong backing from UK-based investors and growing international interest, DRIFT is positioning itself as a potentially transformative player in the global clean hydrogen market and the broader energy transition landscape.
