The maritime industry is facing increasing pressure to adapt to a rapidly changing global landscape. Shipowners, operators, and builders must respond to a growing list of challenges: reducing emissions to meet strict environmental regulations, digitizing operations to optimize performance, minimizing costs in a volatile economic climate, and integrating clean energy and automation into their fleets.
Traditional shipbuilding methods, while proven and robust, often lack the speed and flexibility needed to embrace such disruptive innovation. The result is a widening gap between the demands of modern maritime operations and the solutions currently available. This is the core customer pain point that Damen Venture seeks to solve by accelerating access to new technologies and business models that address sustainability, digitalization, and operational efficiency in the maritime sector .
In response to these industry-wide challenges, Damen Shipyards Group, a company with nearly a century of experience in shipbuilding, established Damen Maritime Ventures (DMV) in 2020 as its corporate venture capital and innovation arm. The unit is part of Damen’s broader strategy to drive transformation in four key areas: sustainability, digitalization, operational excellence, and business model innovation. Rather than relying solely on internal R&D, Damen recognized the need for a hybrid approach, one that combines its deep industry expertise with the agility and creativity of the start-up ecosystem.
Through minority equity investments (typically 5-25%), strategic partnerships, and hands-on support such as access to engineering resources and pilot vessels, Damen Venture enables rapid experimentation and implementation of transformative technologies. Damen Shipyards Group itself was founded in 1927 by brothers Jan and Marinus (Rien) Damen in Hardinxveld Giessendam, the Netherlands, starting as a small local ship repair and construction company. In 1969, Kommer Damen, Jan’s son, revolutionized the business by introducing modular shipbuilding, which allowed standardized hulls to be produced in series and later customized an innovation that enabled Damen to scale globally. Today, the company remains family owned, with Kommer Damen serving as Chairman and his son Arnout Damen as CEO, supported by other family members such as Rose Damen in the luxury yacht division and Annelies Damen on the supervisory board.
The portfolio of Damen Ventures reflects its bold, forward-thinking approach to maritime innovation:
- SolarDuck: A pioneer in offshore floating solar platforms designed to withstand rough sea conditions. Damen collaborates with SolarDuck to explore hybrid power generation systems for offshore and remote marine operations, advancing renewable energy integration in maritime infrastructure.
- Skoon Energy: A clean energy company offering mobile battery containers and a digital platform for renting and sharing green energy assets. Skoon supports decarbonization in ports and facilitates the transition to shore-based power for vessels, aligning with Damen’s emission reduction goals.
- Lumina (formerly Sensing360): Developer of advanced fiber-optic sensors that monitor torque, pressure, and vibration in rotating ship components. When integrated into Damen’s Triton platform, Lumina’s technology enables real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance, boosting operational efficiency and safety.
- Equinox: A start-up focused on converting steady ocean currents into base-load renewable electricity using submerged turbine systems. This long-term initiative aligns with Damen’s offshore engineering expertise and its ambition to support innovative, sustainable energy solutions.
- Runwell: Specializes in smart maritime maintenance through digital work order management, real-time data capture, and process optimization tools. Runwell enhances fleet efficiency by digitizing technical operations, contributing directly to Damen’s goals in operational excellence and vessel lifecycle management.
- Zeabuz: A Norwegian start-up developing autonomous passenger ferries for urban water transport. Damen’s collaboration with Zeabuz supports its exploration into autonomous vessels, low-emission transit, and future-ready maritime mobility especially for short-sea and inland routes.
Today, Damen Venture has become a critical pillar of Damen’s future-oriented innovation strategy. It allows the company to stay ahead of the curve by bridging the gap between traditional shipbuilding and cutting-edge maritime technology. Through strategic investments and partnerships, Damen is not only future-proofing its own operations but also playing a vital role in building a smarter, greener, and more efficient maritime industry. While challenges remain, the groundwork laid by Damen Ventures demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to collaborative, sustainable innovation.
