Neoline is a French maritime company developing and operating wind-powered cargo shipping solutions, with a flagship project called Neoliner Origin, a modern roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) freighter designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by leveraging wind as its primary propulsion method. This innovative approach aims to redirect the global shipping industry toward a lower-carbon future.
Neoline was founded by Michel Péry (Chairman) and Jean Zanuttini (Managing Director) in 2015, on the back of their belief that traditional shipping must adapt to climate change. Neoline emerged to bring wind propulsion back into commercial maritime transport at scale. The company’s journey began with feasibility, design, and patent work followed by the creation of its corporate structure and strategic partners to build the first industrial-scale modern sailing cargo vessel. Over a decade of development culminated in the launch and delivery of Neoliner Origin, the world’s largest modern commercial sail-powered ship.
A next-generation roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) cargo vessel, the Neoliner Origin is equipped with large, automated sail systems mounted on folding masts, allowing it to harness wind energy efficiently while maintaining compatibility with port infrastructure. Auxiliary engines are used only, when necessary, such as during port maneuvers or in low-wind conditions, significantly reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional vessels. The Neoliner Origin is optimized to transport rolling cargo, containers, and oversized freight on regular transatlantic routes, offering a reliable, low-carbon alternative for shippers seeking sustainable maritime logistics without compromising operational performance.
Neoline’s flagship sail-powered cargo project has been supported by a diverse mix of public and private investors, primarily based in France and Europe. The equity financing for the first Neoliner vessel includes major contributions from CMA CGM Group, a leading global shipping and logistics company; ADEME Investissement, a French public investment entity focused on ecological transition; Neoline Développement (majority held by the founders); Corsica Ferries; and Louis Hardy S.A.S. Additional financial support has been provided by public institutions such as La Banque Bleue, Banque des Territoires and the Pays de la Loire Region, while bank financing comes from Crédit Industriel et Commercial (CIC) with a Strategic Projects Guarantee from Bpifrance Assurance Export. The project has also engaged community investors through crowdfunding platforms like WiSEED and received backing from funds including Mer Invest and Pays de la Loire Participations, with energy transition endorsement from partners like EDF. This combination of strategic and regional support reflects strong stakeholder confidence in Neoline’s sustainable maritime vision.
Final Thought
Neoline stands at the forefront of sustainable maritime innovation by reintroducing wind propulsion into modern freight shipping. With a visionary founding team, strong backing from industry leaders and public finance, and the successful launch of Neoliner Origin, the company exemplifies how traditional technologies can be revitalized to meet today’s environmental challenges. As global logistics continues to seek decarbonization pathways, Neoline’s model could inspire broader adoption of wind-assisted and low-carbon shipping solutions worldwide.
